Week 6: San Sebastián

My highlights of the week. As I realize how much time I invest in school, sports and connecting with people, I almost forget about blogging:

  • Starting Spanish school. I have classes from 09:15 till 10:45 and from 11:15 till 12:45. I have two different teachers and we are 4 students (a couple from South Africa living in France and a young student from the Netherlands/Germany living in Madrid);
  • Learning how to surf. My only tries were in Hawaii in 2014 and in Porto in 2016 so I am really starting again from scratch;
  • Having deep and open discussions (for now, I listen mostly to her Spanish 🙂 ) with the landlady’s daughter Nerea;
  • Going to Bilbao to meet Paula, a Spanish architect I met in San Seb at the hostel. We have a wonderful time talking and walking around the city. She shows me some nice architecture as well as the famous Guggenheim museum;
  • In Bilbao, forgetting the time, missing the last bus, finding myself a room at midnight, having an awful night due to allergies in a capsule hostel (quite futuristic, looks like a space ship), going back to school the next morning with the first bus feeling exhausted but alive and happy;
  • Embracing the culture by making a real big siesta to recover;
  • Getting my ass kicked by the waves on Wednesday with no injuries to deplore. Two students get hit by their boards and one of them has a bad cut on the lip;
  • Discovering a nice bar/restaurant with a questionable name (BeerSS) where they have a nice line-up of local craft beers from Bidassoa;
  • Ordering a pickup microphone so I can play in noisy streets. I was inspired by Yannic (see Week 5) and his e-guitar amplifier;
  • Getting my ass kicked by the waves again on Friday, this time with a toe injury. It is all blue now so I’ll have to take a break from this sport for a week at least…

And here are things I’m excited about that might happen soon:

  • Learning more Spanish;
  • Going shopping for a small amplifier;
  • Receiving my pickup mic in 2-3 weeks;
